Riverdale is hills and buildings, and both of them shape how a glass job runs. The streets climb steeply from the river, which means a lot of parked cars sit on a grade, and a windshield really wants to cure on something close to level. Meanwhile a large share of residents park in building garages, and a fair number of those garages were built for smaller vehicles than a modern work van. The two problems tend to arrive together on the same block.
None of that is a barrier, it just needs sorting out before the appointment rather than during it. Ask your building whether there is a level surface lot, a top deck, or space at the entrance where a car can sit for an hour after the install. Once we have that, the work itself is the same as anywhere: glass matched by VIN, moldings and clips replaced rather than reused, and the safe drive-away time honoured before the car moves. Nothing about a hillside address changes the standard the glass is held to.
Broadway runs along the eastern side beneath the elevated line and does the heavy commercial work, with the 1 train overhead and buses stopping continually. Riverdale Avenue and Johnson Avenue carry the local traffic through the residential blocks, and Mosholu Avenue serves the small shopping stretch at the north end. The parkway is the first cause and the geometry explains it. The Henry Hudson has tight curves, narrow lanes and old stone bridges, so traffic runs close together with no shoulder, and a stone thrown up at speed arrives without warning. The hills are the second. Water, grit and winter sand all travel downhill, and a car parked on a steep block collects what the street above sends down, which sandblasts the base of a windshield over a season. Broadway supplies the third, in the form of bus and truck traffic passing close under the el with the road surface patched around the columns. Building garages add the last one, with ramp columns and low ceilings accounting for a steady share of the mirror and quarter glass we replace.
The drive over is more awkward than the distance suggests, because you are crossing the top of the Bronx rather than following one road. Most people work east on Van Cortlandt Park South and across to Broadway or Jerome Avenue, then north through Wakefield and over the city line at East 241st Street into Mount Vernon. Twenty-five minutes without traffic. Anything with commercial plates has to stay off the Henry Hudson anyway, so a surface route is the only route for a work vehicle. Given the drive, most Riverdale customers book mobile instead, and the price and warranty are identical whichever way the car and the glass end up meeting.
