Fast-road miles account for most of it. Drivers here spend real time on the interstate and the parkway, and both deliver stone strikes at a speed that leaves a star rather than a scuff. The parkway adds its own wrinkle, since the narrow lanes and old bridge abutments give you nowhere to go when the car ahead throws something up. Winter contributes the usual freeze and thaw cycle that turns a pit into a crack overnight, and the northern half of the town brings the rural version of the problem: overhanging limbs on unlit roads, and deer moving at dusk near the wooded edges. Long private drives with loose stone finish the list, because a wheel spinning on gravel throws it forward at the car parked ahead.
For anyone who prefers to bring the car in, the sensible route is the Post Road southwest through Mamaroneck and New Rochelle, then across the Mount Vernon line and east to Washington Street. Half an hour, sometimes more when Route 1 is busy. The parkway is faster in a private car and unavailable to work vehicles, which is worth planning for if you drive one. Realistically, most Harrison customers take the mobile appointment instead.
