Two Hartsdales exist as far as glass is concerned. One is the Central Park Avenue corridor, six lanes of retail with cars turning across traffic into plaza entrances all day. The other is the residential side around the station and up the hill, apartment buildings near the platform and houses with driveways beyond them. The first one breaks windshields and the second one is where we usually repair them.
Because the drive up is a straight shot, Hartsdale is one of the easier outer addresses for us to reach, and it is well within the range where mobile service makes more sense than asking you to come down. Chip repairs happen at the curb or in a lot without much fuss. For a windshield we want the car somewhere it can sit for the cure, which for apartment residents usually means a resident lot rather than a metered space on the street. Central Park Avenue, Route 100, defines the town for most drivers, a long commercial run of big-box stores and shopping plazas where the traffic pattern is dominated by left turns and short merges. East of it the Bronx River Parkway heads south toward Scarsdale, and west the Sprain Brook Parkway carries the faster north to south traffic, both of them off limits to commercial plates. The Metro-North Harlem Line stops in the middle of the hamlet, with apartment buildings clustered around the station and a small commercial block beside it. Beyond that the streets climb into the Greenburgh residential grid, quieter, tree-lined, and easy for a van to work in. The contrast between the retail corridor and the streets a quarter mile behind it is sharper here than in most places we serve.

The avenue does most of the harm. Constant turning traffic, delivery vehicles working the plazas and years of patched utility cuts add up to a road surface that throws stone and a driving pattern that keeps you close behind the vehicle in front. The parkways contribute the highway-speed strikes, particularly where salt and sand are laid on heavily through the winter. Around the station, cars left all day pick up the usual parking-lot damage: a door edge into a neighbouring window, a shopping cart into a quarter light, and occasionally a break-in on a vehicle with something visible inside. Higher up in the residential streets, it is trees and weather again, with limbs coming down on parked cars in the storms that reliably arrive each season.
Come south on Central Park Avenue toward Yonkers, then cut east at Yonkers Avenue or Tuckahoe Road to cross into Mount Vernon and make your way to the commercial blocks around Washington Street. Twenty to twenty-five minutes, longer if the retail traffic is heavy. Route 22 through Scarsdale and Tuckahoe is the alternative and it is the route to use in a work vehicle, since the parkways are closed to commercial plates in both directions. Plenty of Hartsdale customers never drive down at all, because a resident lot or a driveway gives the van everything it needs and mobile work costs the same as work done at the shop.

Yes, and it is how most Hartsdale windshields get done. We need the car in a space with room to open the doors and, for a windshield, permission for it to stay put for a couple of hours afterwards.
